An Antique Silver Pocket Watch by Chopard, C1900

An antique silver pocket watch by Chopard, circa 1900.

The watch has a key-winding movement which is working well. A winding key will be included with the watch. The movement is stamped with the initials LUC for Louis-Ulysse Chopard, a watchmaker from the Swiss village of Sonvilier who in 1860 founded the company that still bears his name. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover upon which is engraved various details of the movement.

The movement also bears a patent number which relates to an 1891 patent relating to escapement design. The inventor and applicant was Emile Indermuehle.

The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is .800 silver and there are Swiss hallmarks including the grouse mark for .800 silver. There are traces of a rose gold wash around the outer edge of the back and of the bezel which indicates that it would have had a galonne case originally… as with many watches of this design, much of the gold wash has worn off over the years. There is an initially cartouche to the back of the watch.

The plastic watch lens is in good condition.

The white enamel dial is signed with the name Vikt Johansson, Hedemora… the original Swedish retailer of the watch. One of the hands is a later replacement. The hand on the sub seconds dial is a particularly nice, and unusual, feature as it is in the shape of an arrow. The dial is in very good condition.
