English Antique Webster Silver Pocket Watch, 1890

An antique silver pocket watch by Webster of London.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. Websters were an important family in the horology world with several generations of the same family running the same business over 200 years. The founder of the business was William Webster who established Websters in 1711, after completing his apprenticeship with Thomas Tompion, regarded by many as the father of English clock making.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1890 with a maker’s mark for John Rotherham (Rotherham & Sons were well regarded watch and watch case makers). The case is in good condition with just some gentle unevenness to the back. At the time of the manufacture of this particular watch, Websters was run by Richard Webster who worked from Queen Victoria Street in London and subsequently Gracechurch Street.

The watch glass has very minor marking but is very acceptable.

The signed white enamel dial has an arc shaped hairline crack at the top of the dial but otherwise is in beautiful condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. The hands are initially set by way of the pin-set mechanism.
