A Good Quality Tavannes Pocket Watch, 1920s

A very nice quality Tavannes open faced pocket watch, c1920s.

Tavannes was set up by Henri Sandoz who previously had a company in his own name. He left this company, which was subsequently run by a family member, and set up Tavannes Watch Company in the small Jura mountain municipality of Tavannes in Switzerland. Many watch making factories bought in their movements but Tavannes made their own movements, such as the one in this particular watch.

The movement is stem-winding and is working nicely. It is signed with the Tavannes Watch Co name together with the movement reference 819. The nicely decorated movement is a good sign of quality as it was an extra expense during the manufacturing process. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is the gold plated Star model by the English based watch case maker Aaron Dennison. There is some minor marking to the case but overall it is very acceptable for its age.

The watch glass is in lovely order.

The white enamel dial has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. There is one short very faint hairline crack between 1 and 2, it is difficult to find even with a magnifying loupe.
