Antique 1887 Elgin private label 17 jewel pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working well. The movement is signed Wheatley's Special, 17 jewels and it has the serial number 2603629 which dates it back to 1887. The production run on the 17 jewel movement was only 8700 in total.

The watch was made by Elgin under private label, in other words it was made to be retailed under a different name, in this case Wheatley Brothers, the original retailer of the watch.

Wheatley Brothers was a Canadian retailer based in Second Avenue South in Saskatoon.  They sold an array of items including pocket watches, silverware, jewellery, evening bags and picture frames.

The watch measures 55 mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop so it is a little larger than the standard 50mm pocket watches. The gold filled case was made by the American watch case company and is the Fortune model. It is a good solid case with a screw-on bezel and case back. The case is in nice condition with only the odd mark from use.

The glass lens has faint surface marking from use although very acceptable.

The dial is enamel and it is signed Wheatley Bros. The dial has a small nibble to the centre hole but otherwise it is in nice condition.

The watch has its original blued steel hands.
