Ww1 Silver Half Hunter Trench Watch

An unusual WW1 gents half hunter silver trench watch, a Swiss watch made for the British market.

The watch has a Swiss hand-winding movement which is working nicely and the time keeping is good to within around five minutes over 24 hours.

The watch measures 34.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks for London (import mark), 1917 with a sponsor’s mark for Arthur Rendall. In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required so that Pringles, a London silversmith, could send imported watches for assay. Arthur Rendell was an employee of Robert Pringle & Sons, and probably in charge of the department which handled imported watches, and he registered his initials as the mark.

This particular case is in good condition and the case back is a screw-on fitting which is always a nice sign of quality. The winding crown is a later replacement. The front cover has a plastic lens which is in good condition. There is a button between the bottom lugs which presses to open the hinged front cover.

The inner lens is glass and is in good condition with just light marking.

The white enamel dial is in good condition with just a little marking. Original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

A later black leather strap has been fitted.
