An antique silver pocket watch by Counsell of Faringdon

Edwin Counsell was born in 1823 and listed as a clock and watchmaker. He traded from various premises but was probably at Market Place in Faringdon at the time this particular watch was made.

The watch has a key-winding movement which is working nicely and keeping good time to within around five minutes over 24 hours. A winding key is included. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1876. The case is in good condition with just some rubbing to the engine turned detail on the back of the case, as expected in a piece of its age.

The watch glass has minor marking.

The signed enamel dial has some faint hairline cracks and a chip to the centre of the sub seconds dial. At some stage in its life, two small screws have been fitted to attach the dial.
