Antique Silver Pocket Watch, Thomas Harvey, London

An antique silver fusee pocket watch by Thomas Harvey of London.

The watch has a fusee, or chain driven, movement which is working well and the time keeping is good to within five minutes over 24 hours. The movement is nicely detailed and signed with the watchmaker’s name. A winding key is included together with a second key to initially set the time.

The watch measures 45mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop so a little smaller than the standard 50mm pocket watches. The case is silver and there are hallmarks for London 1883. The engine turned detail is still crisp and there is a central vacant cartouche.

The inner back cover has a later personalised inscription dated 1897. This inner cover has a different maker’s mark to the one on the main case which suggests that a new cover was engraved and subsequently fitted in 1897.

The plastic lens is in good condition.

The white enamel dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed closely, there are two or three faint hairline cracks. Blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
