George I Verge Bracket Clock (England, C. 1725)

Description

A very original George I bracket clock. It has a traditional ebony veneered inverted bell top case, with a brass carrying handle. The sides have glass panels as does the back door. The arch dial has a strike silent feature within the arch and a date aperture above the VI and a mock swinging pendulum. The substantial twin fusee, six pillar movement, has a well engraved backplate and its original verge escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. This clock was made by Francis Mayhew of Parham, Sussex. He worked from 1710 until he died in 1730 and was married in 1723. He was second generation, his father Henry worked around 1690 and his son William worked around 1750.

Current Condition

The case is in excellent original condition, the dial and movement have been restored in our own workshops and is guaranteed for 12 months. The 1/4 repeat mechanism has been removed at some stage in its past. If you would like a 360 video clip of this clock striking please email us.
