John Forrest Chronograph Pocket Watch

John Forrest centre seconds chronograph pocket watch.

The watch has a key-winding movement which is working nicely and the time keeping is good to within around two minutes over 24 hours. A winding key will be included. The movement is signed John Forrest, London, Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty, and it has the serial number 24882.

After Forrest’s death, his family did not control the use of the John Forrest name and a lot of people claimed to be making John Forrest watches and also claimed to be chronometer makers to the Admiralty … there was a Court case is in 1891 to put an end to the mis-use of the John Forrest name. Any watches made after 1876 are not considered to be true John Forrest pieces but happily we can confirm the date of this watch by the hallmark.

The watch measures 59mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver, with gold embellishments, and there hallmarks inside the back cover and also the movement cover for Birmingham 1876. The case has four little pin prick indentations to the back but otherwise is in good condition.

The watch glass is in very nice condition.

The dial has the same 24882 number as the movement. There is a faint hairline crack between 5 and 6 but other than that the dial is in very good condition.
