Antique Silver Fusee Pocket, Reid & Sons Newcastle

Antique silver fusee pocket watch by Reid & Sons of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Reid & Sons were a well regarded firm and exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition and also at the 1862 International Exhibition.

The watch has a fusee (chain driven) movement which has a lovely laid back tick and it is keeping good time to within around three to four minutes or so over 24 hours. The watch comes with an advertising key from H Samuel of Manchester.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1860 with a maker’s mark for the watch case maker John Taylor. The case is in good condition for such an early piece with just one small indentation worth mentioning to the bac of the watch.

The lens is in good condition.

The watch has an enamel dial, which is off white. If viewed through a magnifying loupe, there are three very faint short hairline cracks. The minute hand has some darkening and it is slightly out of shape. Being an earlier watch, it has a good sized subsidiary seconds dial which gives the whole watch a very handsome appearance. There is also an outer minute track.
