Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1750s.
The 8-day movement strikes hours on a bell; repeats at will and retains its original verge escapement. The dial is superb enamel, as are both subsidiary dials ("Strike/Silent and pendulum regulation) and all three hands are engraved pierced brass, one for the centre date.

The dial is signed: William Matthews, London whereas the movement is signed: Thomas Best, London. However this is NOT a marriage; but probably a collaboration between the two makers. Certainly both makers were represented in the "Ilbert" collection. * Two hairline cracks to the main dial. Overall height (excluding handle) 18.5ins (47 cmd).
