J W Benson 9ct Gold Wrist Watch, 1944

A 1940s 9 carat gold wrist watch, originally retailed by J W Benson.

The watch has a Swiss hand-winding movement, with 15 jewels, which is working nicely and the time keeping is good to within around two minutes over 24 hours. The movement is signed J W Benson.

The watch measures 27.5mm wide excluding the winding crown and 28mm high excluding the lugs. In the 1940s, the fashions dictated that men should wear smaller watches so, by today's standards, it is quite a small piece which would suit a gent with a slimmer wrist, or it could be worn by a lady. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the hinged case back for Birmingham 1944, with a case maker's mark for the English maker Aaron Dennison. The case is in good condition with just a little gentle unevenness to the back.

The watch has a white enamel dial with plenty of character with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track. There is some damage to the perimeter of the dial which has resulted in a couple of faint hairline cracks (barely visible to the naked eye).

A new black leather strap has been fitted.
