Antique English Three Quarter Plate Pocket Watch

19th century
Description

An antique English pocket watch with a good quality movement, circa 1890s.

The three quarter plate stem-winding movement is ticking away nicely and the time keeping is good to within around two minutes over 24 hours. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is nickel and has the maker's mark RG for Robert Gravenor. Robert was born in Coventry in January 1852 and he appears on the 1871 Census as a watchmaker. Gravenor entered his own maker's mark at the Chester Assay Office and Goldsmiths Hall, London Assay Office around 1885. He had various workshops including one at Spon Street in Coventry, another Craven Street, Coventry (opened in 1895) and at The Butts, Coventry, opened in 1901. Robert Gravenor died in 1925. This particular case is in nice condition with just light surface marks.

The watch glass has small marks but is very acceptable.

The enamel dial is in good condition and has blued steel hands (changed by way of the pin set mechanism), subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes with a charming antique chain, 26cm long including the clasp and T-bar.
