French Alabaster and Gilt Metal Mantle Clock

19th century
Description

This is an exceptional Victorian French mantel clock with beautiful ormolu mounts in the form of two winged cherubs peering from the crest of the clock. There are doves holding swagged chain to the side mounts and pretty butterflies mounted centrally on a torch crossed with a quiver of arrows. There is a very minor chip to the porcelain dial, below the VI numeral, only really noticeable on close inspection. This is in splendid condition having been extensively restored by our clock restorer as shown in photograph 11 (clock and case dismantled for repair) 12 (movement restored and on test) and photo 13 (showing case restored ready for refitting of movement) The clock runs for 8 days striking a lovely tone on a bell on the hour and half hour. This is a really decorative piece and a lovely size measuring 38cm high, 28cm wide and 12cm deep.

Declaration

Rams Head Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
