Description

An excellent West Country mahogany longcase clock from the County of Somerset.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with and arched white dial displaying a Roman chapter ring, seconds, date and a moonphase feature to the arch. The flame mahogany veneered case with boxwood and ebony inlay throughout and the trunk door flanked by spiral columns with brass Corinthian capitals. The hood also with Corinthian capitals and spiral columns and topped with a crested pediment with three brass eagle finials. The base with similar veneers and inlay and large ogee shaped feet to the front of the clock.

Note: Isaac Hancock is recorded in the 1841 census. He is listed as a Watch & Clockmaker, aged 25, he was married to Mary and had 2 Children. Interestingly he is living next door to a George Hancock, also a Watch & Clockmaker. This may have been his Father. Longcase clocks from the West Country and South Wales are very often made with just front feet, which is exactly the situation with this clock. This enables the clock to lean back against the wall. This particular case has exceptional colour and definition to the flame mahogany veneers.

Height: 7'5"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
