Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in the mid-18th century by Thomas Boulsover and involved fusing a layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. During the Regency period, this technique was extensively used to craft tableware and dining accessories for affluent households.

Traditional 19th-century meat covers were predominantly crafted from Old Sheffield Plate, electroplated nickel silver, or solid sterling silver. The interior was often tinned or left as silvered copper, while the handles were cast separately and riveted or bolted to the main dome.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate items typically show a warm copper undertone where the silver layer has worn through over time, a visual characteristic known as bleeding. They often feature turned-over edges where silver foil was folded to conceal the copper core, alongside hand-drawn fluting or applied die-struck mounts.

Silver meat covers can be arranged in a graduated set atop a dining room sideboard, dresser, or serving console to create a dramatic focal point. They can also be integrated into open kitchen shelving or used as decorative table centerpieces.

Maintain Old Sheffield Plate by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and using specialized non-abrasive silver polish sparingly. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads, as excessive scrubbing will strip away the fused silver layer and expose the copper beneath.
