Gorge Case Striking and Repeating Carriage Clock

Description



A mid 19th Century gorge case carriage clock having a polished brass case, with thick bevel edge glass panels. It has a white enamel dial with five minute markers. The 8 day movement strikes the hours and halves on a gong and has an hour repeat button. The clock has its original lever platform. Made by Achilles Brocot,a famous Clockmaker of the 19th Century. (France, c. 1860)

Provenance

Achille Brocot (1817–1878) was a French clockmaker and amateur mathematician.He is known for his discovery (independently of and contemporaneously with German number theorist Moritz Stern) of the Stern–Brocot tree, a mathematical structure useful in approximating real numbers by rational numbers; this sort of approximation is an important part of the design of gear ratios for clocks. He also made many other horological innovations including refinement of his father Louis-Gabriel's Brocot escapement and the development of clocks with perpetual calendar mechanisms.

Current Condition

The brass case has been polished and is lacquered so it will not tarnish. The movement has been serviced in our own workshops and is guaranteed for 12 months.
