This large Continental Art Deco decorative bowl originates from 1930. The piece takes the form of a heavy vessel shaped from pressed smoky brown glass with a deep brown-green colour which changes according to the light. The upper section displays a flared scalloped rim above a continuous relief-moulded band depicting Bacchantes reclining figures, grapes, and foliage. The smooth lower body curves inward toward an unseen base, reflecting ambient light from the surface below. Ideal for a sophisticated interior, this statement item sits prominently on a sideboard top to hold decorative items or function as a standalone display piece in a living room, dining room, or hallway.

FAQs

An Art Deco Bacchantes glass bowl is a decorative vessel produced during the 1920s or 1930s featuring relief-moulded classical figures, specifically followers of Bacchus, often surrounded by grapes and foliage.

These pieces are created using press-moulded tinted glass, where molten glass is pressed into detailed iron moulds to form relief patterns, followed by hand-polishing or acid-etching to create contrasting matt and polished surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display crisp moulding detail, hand-finished rims, smooth wear on the base, and appropriate weight, often reflecting signature styles from prominent French or Bohemian glassworks.

Display the bowl on a console table or sideboard where natural or directional light can pass through the tinted glass to accentuate the relief detail and depth of colour.

Hand wash the bowl using lukewarm water and mild dish liquid, avoiding abrasive pads or dishwashers, and dry immediately with a lint-free microfibre cloth to retain clarity.
