A Magnificent Anglo/irish Georgian Cut Glass Trifle Bowl

19th century
Description

A magnificent and rare example of Geogian Regency table glass. This impressive piece is a pedestal cut glass trifle/dessert bowl. Smaller than the more easily found fruit bowl, these wonderful pieces would have been at the centre of the well laid Regency dining table at dessert time. It's purpose is borne out by the small light scratches to the inside, made by over 200 years of serving spoons.

The body has stylized pineapple leaves with diamond cutting and below, a band of slanting blaze cutting. The plain stem supports the bowl and there is a large foot with a polished pontil mark. A truly wonderful example, with a practical use today. Dimensions below.

This clear lead crystal trifle bowl originates from the Regency period in an English or Irish workshop. The vessel stands on a round circular foot with a plain pedestal stem supporting a wide cylindrical bowl. The body displays a decorative pattern of stylized pineapple leaves filled with vesica diamond cutting, framed by arches, above a lower band of slanted panel ribbing. Internal light scratches are visible inside the bowl. The piece measures 20 cm high, 16 cm wide and 16 cm deep, with a bowl depth of 12 cm. Today, this bowl functions as a table centrepiece for a dining table or sideboard. The item accommodates displays of fruit, seasonal foliage or decorative items. The clear glass construction reflects natural light from windows or overhead fixtures, suiting traditional dining rooms, living spaces or entrance halls.

Anglo-Irish Georgian glass refers to heavy lead crystal produced in England and Ireland between the mid-18th century and early 19th century. Pieces are characterised by high refractive clarity, thick walls, and deeply hand-cut geometric decoration such as diamonds, fluting, and vesica motifs.

These bowls were crafted from high-lead glass mixture blown into basic shapes before being hand-cut using iron and stone wheels fed with abrasive grit. The foot and stem were separately fashioned and fused to the bowl while hot.

Authentic Georgian lead crystal has a distinct weight and dark ring tone when tapped, alongside sharp cut edges that show subtle unevenness from hand-cutting. Original footed pieces often feature a ground pontil mark underneath the base and minor wear on the resting surfaces.

A Georgian glass bowl functions as a focal point on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or dining table centre. It can be displayed empty to reflect light or utilised to hold seasonal fruit or floral arrangements.

Hand wash the glass in lukewarm water using mild dish detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding sudden temperature changes that cause thermal shock. Do not clean lead crystal in automated dishwashers or use abrasive scrubbing pads.
