Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Oak coffers were primary storage vessels in early European households, widely produced from the medieval period through the seventeenth century. They were constructed to hold bed linens, clothing, silver, and valuable household goods securely under lock and key.

Traditional coffers were crafted from solid native timbers, predominantly English oak, using framed joinery. Components were secured with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs, often accompanied by hand-carved decorative field panels.

Authentic period coffers display hand-planed surfaces, irregularity in peg placement, iron wire hinges or strap hinges, and deep natural patination. Look for signs of authentic historic wear on the base runners and around the iron lock mechanism.

A carved oak coffer functions as statement storage placed at the foot of a bed, positioned in an entryway for footwear storage, or styled as a central coffee table in a living space. The dark timber tone adds visual anchor and historical contrast within modern schemes.

Maintain oak furniture by applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent timber movement or splitting.
