A panetiere is a traditional French food cupboard originating from Provence, designed specifically to store and air fresh bread. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these cupboards feature open turned spindles to permit air circulation while protecting loaves from pests.

Panetieres were constructed using native dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, olivewood, or fruitwood. Construction features traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned spindle balusters, relief carving, and wrought iron or brass fittings.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-pegged joinery, asymmetrical hand-carved decorations such as olive branches or crests, and original turned finials. Look for historical timber shrinkage around panels, hand-wrought metal hinges, and wear around the lock area.

A panetiere functions as a decorative wall-mounted accent or a tabletop display piece in a kitchen, dining room, or hallway. It provides open-concept storage for ceramics, glassware, or folded linens while introducing texture and historical architectural interest.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the timber patina, and keep the object away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
