Popular during the late nineteenth century, Victorian novelty scent bottles were small, decorative containers crafted in whimsical or unusual forms, designed to hold perfume or smelling salts for personal vanity use.

These items typically feature coloured lead glass, such as cranberry or cobalt blue, combined with silver, electroplated nickel, or gold mounts and stoppers.

Authentic pieces generally feature British silver hallmarks or maker marks stamped into the metal mounts, alongside hand-finished glass with characteristic wear to the base.

Small scent bottles can be styled on a mirrored vanity tray, placed within a glass apothecary cabinet, or used as a decorative accent piece on a dressing table.

Clean the glass exterior with a soft microfibre cloth and polish the silver mounts gently using a specialist silver polishing cloth without submerging internal stoppers or seals in liquid.
