CIRCA: 1750 £5,000.

Height: 14”, (36cm)Width: 26”,(66cm) Depth: 18”, (46cm) 36cm high.

Provenance:Formerly the property of Cyril Luckman and by repute in possession of Commodore Anson, 1697 – 1762 who sailed around the world in HMS Centurion 1740 - 1744.

Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, PC, FRS(23 April 1697–6 June 1762) was a Royal Navy officer and politician from the Anson family.

He served as a junior officer during the War of the Spanish Succession and then saw active service against Spain at the Battle of Cape Passaro, off the south tip of Sicily, during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. He then undertook a circumnavigation of the globe during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Anson commanded the fleet that defeated the French Admiral de la Jonquière at the First Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747, during the War of the Austrian Succession.

Anson went on to be First Lord of the Admiralty during the Seven Years' War. Among his reforms were the removal of corrupt defence contractors, improved medical care, submitting a revision of the Articles of War to Parliament to tighten discipline throughout the Navy, the transfer of British marines from Army to Navy authority, and a system for rating ships according to their number of guns.

This George II mahogany naval decanter chest dates from the eighteenth century and follows a Georgian style. The warm brown wooden box has a hinged cover, brass carrying handles, castors, a central brass escutcheon plate with a decorative drop handle, and two internal lidded wooden canisters with small brass knobs. The interior reveals thirteen glass decanters with faceted stoppers sitting inside individual fitted compartments, alongside an olive green velvet lining on the inside of the lid. The box measures 36 cm high, 66 cm wide and 46 cm deep. This piece works well placed on a sideboard top or in a gentleman's library, providing practical storage for glassware while adding a traditional nautical accent to the interior.

A George III naval decanter chest is an eighteenth-century portable wooden case, typically constructed from mahogany, engineered to store and transport glass spirit decanters securely aboard ships or during travel.

These chests were predominantly built using solid or veneered mahogany, fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons, lined with velvet or baize, and housed hand-blown lead glass decanters.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware with original patination, hand-blown glass bottles with punt marks, and appropriate wear to the interior fabric lining.

Decanter chests can be displayed open on a dining room sideboard, home bar cart, or library table, serving as a historic functional focal point alongside contemporary glassware.

Clean the woodwork with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly, while washing the glass decanters by hand using lukewarm water to prevent thermal shock to historical lead crystal.
