This George II Irish mahogany silver chest or blanket chest on an original stand dates from the mid-eighteenth century. The dark brown timber has a rich finish and natural patina, complemented by brass hardware. The rectangular hinged top has a caddy moulded edge, while the front displays an original brass escutcheon with an unusual keyhole cover above two small drawers fitted with over lip mouldings and original brass drop handles. The low stand rests on well-carved cabriole legs featuring scalloped shell carvings at the knees, terminating in ball and claw feet. Measuring 106.7 cm wide, 53.3 cm deep, and 88.9 cm high, the piece suits traditional living spaces, bedrooms, or hallways as a statement storage chest. Its generous internal compartment accommodates blankets, linens, or silver, while the lower drawers provide additional space for smaller items. The sturdy construction and timeless design allow the chest to function as an accent table or display surface while serving its primary storage purpose in a period or country house interior.

A George II silver chest on stand is an 18th-century storage piece crafted in Great Britain and Ireland between 1727 and 1760, historically utilised to secure silver, textiles, and household valuables.

18th-century Irish pieces were typically constructed from dense, dark mahogany imported from the West Indies, utilising hand-dovetailed joinery, brass escutcheons, and deeply carved support frames with cabriole legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy timber weight, hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass hardware, and distinctive Dublin-style carving details such as claw-and-ball feet on cabriole legs.

A chest on stand functions effectively as a focal piece in a hallway, reception room, or bedroom, providing practical storage while adding historical grounding to contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying a natural beeswax polish annually.
