Antique Georgian Mahogany Glazed Bookcase | Astragal Glazing

18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique Georgian glazed bookcase in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and beautifully chosen timber.

The upper section has a pair of astragal glazed doors with geometric glazing bars, enclosing adjustable shelves. The base has a pair of panelled cupboard doors with a brass escutcheon, opening to a shelved interior.

The bookcase is crowned with a moulded cornice over a plain frieze, the base has a moulded top forming a useful ledge, and it stands on shaped bracket feet. The backs are of traditional pine board construction, consistent with its age.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain, with flame-figured door panels, and a warm, rich colour with a deep mellow patina.

The bookcase comes apart in two sections for ease of delivery and access. Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable Georgian mahogany bookcase, a perfect addition to any study, library, living room or dining room.

This Georgian bookcase is constructed from mahogany, glass, and brass, rendered in a warm dark brown colour with a figured grain and flame-figured door panels. The upper section consists of a pair of doors with geometric astragal glazing bars and a moulded cornice, while the lower section comprises panelled cupboard doors with a small round brass escutcheon, all resting on shaped bracket feet. The piece stands 197.5 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 44.5 cm deep overall, dividing into two sections for transport. In a modern home, such a piece serves as a traditional storage cabinet in a study, library, living room, or dining room. The upper glazed doors allow for the display of books or collections, while the lower panelled doors conceal additional storage space. The timber displays a deep mellow patina and traditional construction details including pine board backs, providing practical storage with period character for everyday use in residential interiors.

Georgian glazed bookcases typically feature proportioned mahogany timber construction, divided glass panes held by delicate wooden astragal glazing bars, and lower panelled storage cupboards.

Craftsmen utilised solid mahogany and veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, mouth-blown glass panes, and solid oak or pine secondary timbers for internal shelving and backboards.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregularities in original glass, hand-cut joinery, period brass hardware, and natural timber oxidisation on unseen surfaces.

This style functions as a focal storage piece in living rooms, dining spaces, or home offices, pairing effectively with minimalist ceramics, modern art, or curated book collections to contrast classic wood tones.

Maintain timber surfaces using natural beeswax, keep glass clean with microfibre cloths avoiding harsh chemicals on wood edges, and position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping.
