Rare Edinburgh Crystal E&l Amber Flower Vase C1927-1939

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

An exceptional large amber glass vase made by Edinburgh & Leith Flint Glass Works between 1927 and 1939.

It has a broad flared and lipped rim above a substantial tapering body, with bold wrythen moulding spiralling down the vase and continuing beneath the base, where the ribs converge around a polished pontil.

The pontil bears the acid-etched Edinburgh Crystal E&L mark.

The rich amber colour combined with the strong flowing wrythen form gives the vase a particularly striking appearance and demonstrates the quality of Edinburgh & Leith's decorative glass during the inter-war period.

This vase comes from the Dr Jill Turnbull Collection, assembled as part of Jill's extensive research into the history of Scottish glassmaking. Her research culminated in a number of publications, including From Goblets to Gaslights: The Scottish Glass Industry 1750–2006.

This appears to be a particularly rare form. Despite extensive searching, we have been unable to locate another example of this vase.

This amber crystal vase originates from the 1930 Art Deco period and is made by Edinburgh & Leith Flint Glass Works. The piece exhibits an optic swirl pattern with a broad flared rim, a tapered body, and bold wrythen moulding that spirals down to a polished pontil bearing an acid-etched Edinburgh Crystal E&L mark. Measuring 20.3 cm in height with a 14.2 cm diameter, the glass has a warm honey-amber tone and smooth glossy finish. In a modern interior, this vase sits comfortably atop a sideboard or display table as a decorative centrepiece. It holds fresh cut stems or stands alone to catch the light, bringing a vibrant splash of colour and period design to a living room, dining area or hallway.

Art Deco glassware from this period typically features structural geometric shapes, bold optical swirl patterns, and vibrant tinted hues such as amber, green, or cobalt blue.

Coloured crystal was created by adding specific metallic oxides to the molten glass batch, with optical swirl patterns produced using specialised master moulds prior to final shaping.

Authentic pieces exhibit high density, crisp clarity, distinct optical mould details, and occasionally possess etched maker marks or original paper labels on the base.

Position amber glass near natural light sources such as window sills or console tables to allow sunlight to pass through and highlight the warm golden tones and optical contours.

Hand wash gently in tepid water using mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, or rapid temperature changes that could cause thermal shock.
