This George III sugar basin dates from the Georgian period and takes the form of a navette-shaped basket with a fitted cobalt blue glass liner. The piece comprises a sterling silver body resting on a spreading pedestal foot, complemented by a vertical swing handle. Decoration includes bright-cut engraving with an oval cartouche, pierced geometric lattice work along the upper bowl, and a beaded rim and handle border. Full hallmarks appear underneath the foot alongside an incuse duty mark, while the silver surfaces show a polished finish and the glass displays a rich blue hue. Measuring 15 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep, this small table article suits placement upon a dining sideboard or a living room display table as a decorative container or serving accessory.

During the 18th century, silver sugar baskets featuring removable cobalt blue glass liners were crafted for serving sugar at tea tables, protecting the interior metal from moisture while displaying openwork silver patterns.

These vessels combine sterling silver frames, embellished with pierced geometric lattice and bright-cut engraving, with blown cobalt blue glass liners.

Authentic items display a full set of British hallmarks, including the town mark, lion passant for sterling purity, makers mark, date letter, and monarch duty mark.

Place the item as a decorative accent on a sideboard, mantle, or console table where ambient light highlights the contrast between polished silver and deep blue glass.

Remove the glass insert to wash gently with warm water and mild liquid detergent, while cleaning the silver structure separately using a soft polishing cloth and specialised silver cream.
