We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hall lanterns originated in the eighteenth century as enclosed glass fixtures designed to protect candle flames from draughts in large entryways and stairwells. Over time, these functional pieces evolved into decorative architectural lighting crafted from gilt metal, cast brass, and blown glass.

Authentic period hall lanterns generally feature brass or gilded bronze frameworks supporting curved or flat clear glass panels. Internal fittings often consist of central stem clusters holding multiple candle sockets, suspended from chain-link drops.

Look for signs of hand-crafted construction, such as hand-cut threads, irregular hand-blown glass, and natural surface patination or gilding wear. Original solder joints, period-appropriate chain links, and cast metal detail work also distinguish original examples from modern reproductions.

A classic hall lantern serves as a focal point when positioned above a foyer, stairwell, or kitchen island. Its transparent glass enclosure allows light to disperse broadly while adding architectural structure without visually overpowering contemporary or traditional spaces.

Dust the metal framework regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that could strip historic gilding or lacquer finishes. Clean the glass panels gently with a diluted alcohol or vinegar solution applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the fixture.
