This Georgian apothecary jar is an 18th-century blown glass object. The piece presents a clear colour scheme with a wide flared rim, a bulbous body, a knopped stem, and a wide circular pedestal foot. The transparent glass vessel displays a rounded body above a hollow baluster stem and a domed circular foot, with a pontil centre visible on the underside. Measuring 30 cm in height and 20 cm in diameter, the jar possesses practical proportions for display. Positioned within a gentleman's library theme, the vessel functions effectively as a decorative accent placed on a bookshelf in a home. The clear material and traditional silhouette complement interior settings focused on historical accessories and pharmaceutical antiques.

Historically used by apothecaries and medical practitioners during the 18th century, leech jars were designed to store live leeches used for bloodletting. They typically feature a flared lip allowing a breathable fabric or parchment cover to be bound over the top.

These jars were hand-blown using soda glass or lead glass, frequently displaying subtle air bubbles, seed marks, and pontil scars on the underside. The flared rims, knopped stems, and pedestal bases were shaped manually while the glass remained hot.

Authentic period glass displays natural wall thickness variations, hand-drawn pontil scars, micro-inclusions, and natural grey or green undertones. Genuine wear patterns appear consistently on the bottom surface of the circular foot.

These historical vessels function as focal points when placed within a cabinet of curiosities, arranged on library shelving, or positioned alongside modern ceramic and wooden objects.

Wash gently by hand using tepid water and mild liquid soap, avoiding hot water, dishwashers, and abrasive scrubbers. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free soft cloth to prevent mineral deposits.
