Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Low open mahogany bookcases were popularised in the 19th century, featuring accessible shelving without glass doors to create an open display for personal library collections. Design elements often borrow from Regency and Victorian styles, incorporating architectural details such as fluted pilasters, carved capitals, and turned feet.

These bookcases are typically crafted from solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers. traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints were used alongside hand-carved decorative motifs and adjustable wooden shelf supports.

Authentic period pieces show natural wear, oxidation, and colour depth within the wood grain. Evidence of hand-carving on the pilasters, original shelf support mechanisms, and solid back boards with original fixing marks indicate genuine age.

Pairing low open bookcases allows for symmetrical styling on either side of a fireplace, under a low window, or along a hallway wall. Their surface tops double as display areas for artwork, lamps, and decorative accessories alongside curated book collections.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional polishing with natural beeswax will maintain the wood lustre and protect the patina.
