This Edwardian sterling silver trinket box bears the Birmingham hallmarks for 1905 from maker Henry Matthews. The silver item takes a lobed quatrefoil-shaped oval body with a hinged lid carrying an embossed relief of five Reynolds angels framed within a beaded border. Hallmarks appear on the base. The piece measures 2.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a modern interior, the box finds a practical home on a bedside table or dressing table to store small jewellery pieces and keepsakes safely. The reflective polished surface and detailed cherub motif bring traditional English country house character to the room.

Edwardian silver trinket boxes produced between 1901 and 1910 frequently featured repousse artwork inspired by Sir Joshua Reynolds 1787 painting A Childs Portrait in Different Views (commonly called Reynolds Angels). These items typically exhibit lobed or contoured shapes, chased details, beaded borders, and form part of traditional dressing table suites.

These boxes were constructed from sterling silver containing 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Decorative elements were produced using repousse hammering from behind and fine chasing on the surface, often fitted with a hinged lid and polished interior.

Authentic British silver from this era bears a full set of official assay hallmarks: a lion passant mark indicating sterling purity, a town mark (such as an anchor for Birmingham), a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and a registered makers mark.

A sterling silver casket can be positioned on a vanity unit, bedside table, or decorative tray in a bedroom to hold small items. It functions both as an accent piece and functional storage for everyday jewellery.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and clean using a dedicated silver polish or cream designed for fine metalwork. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can strip oxidation from the recessed details, and store in low-humidity environments to reduce tarnish.
