This pair of mid-19th century Chinese porcelain table lamps exhibits a Chinoiserie style suited to an English Country House interior. The lamps comprise baluster-form ceramic bodies decorated with underglaze blue and white floral scrollwork, supported on moulded edged circular brass bases and fitted with original brass oil burner mechanisms now converted to electricity. They are completed by flared cream fabric shades. Visible details include turned brass mounts and intricate blue painting upon the porcelain glaze. Measuring 76 cm high with the shades attached, these lamps are suitable for placement on a sideboard top to provide functional accent lighting in a living room, dining room, or hallway. They integrate well into traditional period schemes while offering practical electrical illumination.

During the nineteenth century, Chinese porcelain vessels and oil lamps were imported to Europe and North America in significant numbers. Many of these items were crafted during the Qing dynasty as oil lighting or decorative vases and were later converted to electric table lamps during the early twentieth century.

These lighting fixtures typically feature kaolin ceramic bodies decorated with underglaze cobalt blue pigment, complemented by brass or bronze burner fittings and fabric or silk lampshades.

Authentic nineteenth-century Chinese porcelain displays hand-painted decoration with slight variations in brushwork, historical surface patina or oxidisation on brass mountings, and hand-formed pottery bases rather than modern mass-produced ceramics.

Positioning a pair symmetrically on a console table, sideboard, or pair of bedside tables provides visual balance. The blue and white painted finish pairs effectively with dark wood, gilt accents, or contemporary neutral colour palettes.

Clean the porcelain bases and fabric shades with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical cleansers on glazed surfaces or patinated brass mounts, and ensure electrical components are periodically evaluated by a professional electrician.
