Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tall oak open bookcase from the Edwardian period brings traditional style to a home library or study. Constructed from dark brown timber with a beaded edge, the piece includes five fixed shelves arranged within a gallery top and notched side rails, supported by a sturdy plinth base. Visible details include five distinct rows of vintage hardback books with varied spine colours in red, yellow, green, blue and black, aged leather bindings, and gold lettering. The entire unit measures 120.5 cm high, 63.5 cm wide, 39.5 cm deep. Positioned against a wall, this bookcase provides practical vertical storage for literary collections while adding warmth and traditional character to a room. The open shelving allows for easy access to volumes, while the compact footprint suits smaller studies, hallways or living spaces. The repolished dark timber finish complements classic interior schemes, making it a functional addition for book enthusiasts looking to display hardbacks in an orderly manner.

FAQs

An antique open bookcase typically features exposed horizontal shelving without glass or wooden doors, designed for accessible literature storage. Popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces were constructed using durable hardwoods such as oak to support substantial weight.

Traditional bookcases of this era were primarily constructed from solid English or European oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery. Back panels were typically constructed using solid tongue-and-groove boards or framed timber panels.

Authentic period examples demonstrate signs of hand-planing, hand-cut joinery, and natural age-related wear along the shelf fronts. Original finishes frequently exhibit a rich, developed patina with subtle colour variations across the timber grain.

A tall, narrow open bookcase provides vertical storage in alcoves, hallways, or home offices without intruding on floor space. Modern styling often alternates rows of books with ceramic vessels or framed artwork to create visual balance.

Keep timber furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional application of a natural beeswax polish will preserve the timber finish.
