This Edwardian cruet set from 1900 comprises a mustard pot with a hinged lid and small spoon, an open salt cellar, and a pepper shaker with a domed lid and finial. The trio is fashioned from silver and cobalt glass, displaying a metallic silver exterior finish and dark blue interior liners. Pierced openwork scroll decoration covers the cylindrical bodies of each piece, while raised moulded rims define the bases and tops. Ideal for placement on a dining table or sideboard top in an English country house interior, this tableware set holds condiments for family meals and gatherings. The small vessels rest securely on flat surfaces.

FAQs

An antique cruet set is a collection of small vessels designed to hold condiments such as salt, pepper, mustard, vinegar, or oil for formal dining service.

Edwardian cruet sets were commonly crafted from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, often featuring openwork pierced designs fitted with removable cobalt blue glass liners to protect the metal from corrosive salts.

Authentic Edwardian silver pieces usually bear hallmarks indicating the maker, standard of silver, assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the period between 1901 and 1910.

Display the set on a dining sideboard, incorporate it into a formal table arrangement, or style it alongside period glassware inside a glazed display cabinet.

Clean the metal work using a soft cloth with silver polish, while hand-washing the removable glass liners separately in warm water to prevent tarnish and chemical reaction.
