Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian ottoman log box dates from 1890 and serves as both a storage receptacle and a fireside seat. The rectangular body has a padded, hinged top that lifts open, featuring a serpentine-shaped front and sides covered in deep burgundy velvet. Two vertical bands of symmetrical woolwork tapestry run down the front and across the lid, displaying embroidered winged griffins and acanthus motifs. Polished brass studding outlines the upholstered edges, complementing the dark wooden plinth that runs along the base on wooden wheel castors. The exterior shows visible surface wear to the velvet pile, while maintaining its original materials and structure. Measuring 68.5 cm high, 71 cm wide and 40.5 cm deep, the box functions practically as a fireside hearth accessory for storing logs or household items. In a modern home, it suits placement beside a living room fireplace or at the foot of a bed, combining traditional textile art with concealed storage utility.

During the late nineteenth century, domestic heating relied heavily on open coal and wood fires. Cabinetmakers created decorative, fabric-covered storage boxes to conceal fuel near the hearth while providing additional seating in drawing rooms and parlours.

These storage boxes were typically constructed with sturdy timber frames and lined interiorly to contain fuel residue. The exteriors were upholstered using plush fabrics such as velvet, wool tapestry, or needlepoint, finished with decorative brass close-nailing and supported by solid wood plinths.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature traditional upholstery methods, including hand-tacked upholstery, period needlepoint or tapestry work, aged brass studs with patina, and dark stained hardwood bases with hand-turned or shaped plinth mouldings.

While originally intended for wood or coal storage by a fireplace, these versatile items serve as end-of-bed blanket storage, entrance hallway seating, or functional coffee table ottomans in contemporary living spaces.

Upholstery should be gently vacuumed using a soft brush attachment to remove dust without disturbing the fibres. Keep the piece away from dampness and open fire embers, and clean visible wood plinths with a non-abrasive beeswax polish.
