18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 18th century Georgian bookcase in golden oak, a beautifully proportioned period piece with a wonderful sense of warmth and character.

Resting on traditional bracket feet, three generous drawers provide useful storage to the lower section, each finished with simple knob handles.

FAQs

Georgian bookcases produced during the 18th century are defined by symmetrical proportions, classical architectural mouldings, and glazed upper doors with geometric or arched glazing bars. They were frequently constructed in two separate sections for ease of transport, combining display upper sections with drawer or cupboard bases.

Cabinetmakers of the era primarily utilised solid English oak, walnut, and imported mahogany. Secondary timbers such as pine or deal were used for drawer linings and back panels, while hand-blown cylinder glass was fitted into the door frames using putty and timber glazing bars.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back boards with visible tool marks, and minor distortions or air bubbles within the original hand-blown glass panes. Furniture from this era also exhibits natural shrinkage cracks and oxidation to unpainted timber surfaces over time.

A large wooden bookcase can be integrated into modern interiors by contrasting its warm timber tones against neutral walls. Displaying curated ceramics, modern art books, or structured greenery inside the glazed section helps balance traditional craft with contemporary aesthetics.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing gently along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement, warping, or cracking.
