Patrick Moorhead Antiques has dated these Imari Porcelain Palace Vases to the 19th Century.
The richly ornamented surfaces display the characteristic Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, white and extensive gilt, applied with remarkable density and precision. Central cartouches depict refined classical courtly scenes, with elegantly dressed figures gathered within landscaped gardens, beside pavilions, bridges and mature trees. Surrounding panels feature auspicious dragons, phoenixes, stylised clouds, flowering chrysanthemums, peonies and scrolling foliage. Additional geometric diaper borders, floral medallions, brocade patterns and repeated ornamental reserves create a highly layered visual effect. The deep blue ground provides a dramatic contrast to the colourful narrative scenes, while gilded highlights enrich the decoration. Together, these exceptional vases exemplify the grandeur, technical virtuosity and export-oriented splendour associated with late nineteenth-century Meiji period Imari porcelain.
