This Edwardian vanity jar is fashioned from cut glass and sterling silver, dating from 1904 with a London hallmark. The round vessel features an all-over diamond and crosshatch cut glass pattern across the body, supporting a silver lid decorated with an embossed scrollwork rim. Inserted into the centre of the lid is a hand-painted ceramic plaque showing an eighteenth-century pastoral courting couple in pink, blue, yellow and white garments against a pale green and brown landscape. The silver mount displays light surface wear consistent with age, while the glass and porcelain remain free of chips or cracks. Measuring 5.5 cm high by 5 cm wide and 5 cm deep, this item sits appropriately on a bedside table or dressing table to hold small personal items within a bedroom or bathroom setting.

Produced during the reign of King Edward VII, these dressing table accessories feature silver lids mounted on lead crystal or cut glass bodies. Lids frequently incorporated intricate repousse borders, hand-painted enamel, or porcelain inserts depicting classical and pastoral themes.

These jars were typically constructed from heavy cut or molded glass paired with sterling silver or silver-plated lids. Decorative inserts were often made from hand-painted porcelain or painted enamel plaques attached to the central panel of the metal lid.

Authentic British pieces bear hallmarks on the rim or lid, indicating silver purity, city of assay, makers mark, and date letter. Additionally, hand-cut glass facets and hand-painted artwork display slight variations consistent with early twentieth-century manufacturing techniques.

These small vessels serve as functional decorative accents on bedside tables, bathroom countertops, or vanity trays. They can be used to hold small items of jewellery, cotton pads, or coins while adding historical texture to modern interior displays.

Clean the glass base with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals. Polish the silver rim using a specialized silver polishing cloth, taking care not to rub abrasive cleaners onto painted porcelain or enamel surfaces.
