Early 18th Century Oak Sword Chest

Description

A nice example of a primitive oak Sword Chest dating from the early 18th Century. It has a traditional planked form standing on shaped end feet with a molded front plinth. It has attractive chip edge carvings and the front is engraved with the initials H R and the date 1724, probably to commemorate a marriage or birth.

The lid opens on its original ring hinges and inside it has a boarded base with a small open candle box. The lock and lock plate have been removed at some point but it is generally clean and tidy inside.

It is in good condition for its age and has developed a lovely rich patina. There are of course some signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and minor stains and a small chip to one corner (see photo) but nothing detrimental. There are some minor signs of historic worm in places around the base and legs but it has all been treated as a precaution. The chest has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.
