Jacobean Revival Carved Oak Drop-leaf Side Cabinet, C.1920

Description

A Jacobean Revival oak side cabinet or serving table, dating to the early 20th century.

The rectangular top is fitted with a drop leaf to either end, allowing the surface to be extended when required. Below is a long frieze drawer, boldly carved with a repeating Gothic-style arched motif and fitted with turned wooden handles.

The cupboard beneath is enclosed by a pair of panelled doors, each centred with deeply carved architectural decoration, and retaining decorative iron butterfly hinges and wooden turn catches. The cabinet is raised on turned front supports united by a useful full-width undertier.

Constructed in oak with an attractive light, warm colour and plenty of visible grain, the piece has acquired the knocks, marks and surface wear expected from age and use, giving it a pleasantly informal country-house character.

A practical and decorative piece of useful proportions, equally suited as a side cabinet, hall table, drinks cabinet or serving table.
