Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Breccia marble tops with thumb-moulded serpentine rims: shaped to follow the bombé carcasses.
Book-matched quartered veneer across drawer fronts: cabinet work of the Louis XV revival.
Cast brass mounts with natural handling tarnish: early twentieth-century hardware.
Hardwood drawer linings with shaped curved sides: traditional cabinet making.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of French Louis XV style bedside cabinets dates to 1920. Each cabinet is made from warm brown kingwood with marquetry inlay, finished with a serpentine shaped marble top with a thumb moulded edge, and stands on shaped cabriole legs with ornate ormolu mounts. The bombe shaped body contains two drawers fitted with original ornate brass handles, alongside bombe shape sides and gilt bronze mounts. Noticeable details include the visible wood grain patterns in shades of brown and tan on the drawer fronts, the mottled purple and beige tones of the marble tops, and the cast scrolling design of the metal mounts. Measuring 74.5 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, these cabinets fit comfortably beside a bed in a principal bedroom or guest suite to hold a reading lamp and nighttime essentials.

FAQs

Louis XV style bedside cabinets typically feature delicate cabriole legs, curvilinear bombe shapes, intricate marquetry wood inlays, and decorative gilt-bronze ormolu mounts topped with shaped marble slabs.

Craftsmen traditionally constructed these pieces using fine hardwoods such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood for veneer marquetry, combined with cast brass or bronze metal fittings and variegated marble tops.

Authentic period or high-quality revival pieces feature hand-cut joinery inside the drawers, original marble with polished bevelled edges, hand-chased metal mounts, and natural aging across timber veneers.

Place a matching pair on either side of an upholstered bed frame, layering contemporary ceramic lamps or neutral artwork above to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the wood veneers regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting; clean the marble top using a pH-neutral stone cleaner to protect natural surfaces from acid etching.
