It features a short neck with a tooled lip finish, above a globular onion-shaped body, and stands on a push-up base.
Historianl Context
By the end of the 18th century, bottle making in Scotland was a well-established and important industry, closely tied to trade, shipping, and the storage of wine and spirits. Centres such as Leith (Edinburgh’s port), Glasgow, and Alloa were key production areas, supplying both local demand and export markets.
Scottish bottles of this period are typically made from “black glass” (a very dark olive to almost black), produced using iron-rich sands and coal-fired furnaces. The bottles were thick, strong, and often slightly irregular in form. This dark colouring helped protect the contents from light, while also reflecting the relatively unrefined raw materials used in their manufacture.
