Fine Old Sheffield Plated Wine Cooler with Crest C1800

Description

Dating to c1800, this Old Sheffield Plated wine cooler has an impressive crest to the front. This solid and sturdy piece has a removable internal ice bucket and is tinned to the interior. Bearing no makers marks and with two inlaid silver cartouches, one engraved for 'Denique Coelum' (Heaven at Last), possibly for the Melville family.

In good condition with some of the expected copper bleed to the raised edges and a few stubborn marks as is to be expected due to age and use. It also has one small ding to the body.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in the 1740s where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets.
