Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in the 1740s where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets. Popular throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it allowed silversmiths to create substantial silver-coated tableware, such as wine coolers and trays, prior to the commercial adoption of electroplating in the 1840s.

Georgian wine coolers were constructed using double-walled or lined metal vessels designed to hold ice and water without dampening the exterior surface. They often feature cast ornate handles, shell or acanthus leaf rims, and pedimented bases, usually fused over copper cores or raised from sterling silver.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate can often be identified by inspecting the underside or edges where the copper layer may show through wear, known as bleeding. Additionally, pieces frequently feature rubbed-in silver solder plaques where armorial crests were engraved, as well as distinct drawn wire edges rather than electroplated seams.

An antique silver wine cooler serves as a striking focal point on a dining table, sideboard top, or bar cart. Beyond its functional use for chilling champagne, it can be repurposed as an elegant vase for large botanical displays or elevated seasonal greenery.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate gently using a soft cloth, warm water, and mild dish soap to avoid removing the thin silver layer. If tarnished, apply a specialised non-abrasive silver polish sparingly, ensuring no residue accumulates in deeply chased decorative relief details.
