Antique Georgian Period Walnut Wall Mounting Bookcase

19th century
Description

A gorgeous antique Georgian period walnut wall mounting bookcase. This was made in England, we would date it from around the 1800-1820 period.

It is of extremely fine quality and is beautifully crafted from solid walnut. The front side rails are finely turned and have lovely brass finials at the top shelves. The sides are pierced with X frame designs, the walnut has a gorgeous colour tone and wonderful grain patterns. There are built in fixtures at the back to mount this on a wall, it also sits flat on the floor so can be used as a regular floor standing bookcase.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor historical wear remaining beneath the polish here and there, with a beautiful overall patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian period wall-mounted bookcases are recognised for their symmetrical proportions, open-tier design, and functional wall storage. Crafted during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these pieces frequently incorporate decorative side lattices, architectural turnings, and quality timber construction.

These units were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak. The joinery features hand-cut mortise and tenon or dovetail joints, complemented by turned wooden spindles, lattice side supports, and brass mounting hardware.

Authenticity can be verified by examining the reverse for hand-sawn timber backing, original brass fixings, and signs of historical wear or natural oxidation. Hand-turned spindles and minor variations in wood grain and dimensions also indicate hand craftsmanship rather than modern machine production.

Position the shelf unit above a low console table or sideboard to create a balanced visual focal point. Display a mix of hardback books, antique ceramics, and small framed artwork across the open tiers to introduce depth and texture.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually along the direction of the wood grain, avoiding high humidity and direct heat sources to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
