Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Hand-sawn pine backboards: rough-planed secondary timber showing deep oxidisation.
Hand-cut dovetails on the curved waist drawer: typical early 19th-century workshop construction.
Interlaced Gothic fretwork frieze: decorative taste popular in the Regency period.
Original iron locks and cast brass escutcheons: fittings unaltered since manufacture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency double height corner cupboard from around 1820 takes a bowfront form in solid dark mahogany brown timber, standing as a single piece that measures 211 cm high, 86.5 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. The design incorporates a moulded cornice above a Gothic blind arcading frieze, paired with reeded front doors, a central waist drawer, simple brass escutcheons, and tall shaped front feet. Inside, the green painted interior holds shelving across its upper and lower compartments. The timber displays a polished finish with subtle signs of age and natural wear across the surfaces, while the construction includes fluted imitation tambour detailing. This piece provides practical storage for dining rooms, hallways, or living spaces in a contemporary home.

FAQs

Originating in the early 19th century, a Regency double height corner cupboard is a tall, floor-standing cabinet designed to fit flush into a 90-degree corner, featuring vertically stacked upper and lower storage compartments.

Cabinetmakers during this period predominantly utilised solid mahogany or oak for the visible framework, often employing reeded panels, soft pine secondary timbers, and cast brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period locks, irregular saw marks on structural backboards, and natural timber oxidisation on unpolished interior surfaces.

Placing a tall cupboard in an underutilised corner maximises floor space while adding architectural height, creating an engaging contrast against modern neutral walls.

Position mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, applying a quality beeswax polish sparingly once per year along the grain.
