Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and is characterised by its distinct palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, often complemented with gilded highlights and hand-painted enamel decoration.

Large floor-standing vases were typically hand-thrown on wheels in sections using dense kaolin clay, joined, fired at high temperatures, painted with underglaze cobalt blue, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamels in lower-temperature secondary firings.
