Exceptional Quality 17th Century Antique Oak Mule Chest with Marquetry Inlay

17th century
Description

A rare and impressive antique 17th century oak mule chest featuring unusual marquetry-inlaid panels with floral motifs and a rich, warm colour developed through centuries of age. The hinged lid opens to reveal a generous interior complete with the original candle box, a desirable and increasingly uncommon survival. The chest retains its original iron strap hinges, locks, and handles, all contributing to its strong period character. This is a substantial and decorative piece with excellent presence, ideal for both storage and display.

Dimensions:

Height: 78 cm (30.7 in)

Width: 127.5 cm (50.2 in)

Depth: 52.5 cm (20.7 in)

Condition:

In good antique condition throughout, showing expected signs of age and use including surface wear, minor marks, historic repairs, and shrinkage splits, all consistent with a 17th-century piece. The structure remains solid and sound, with the marquetry well preserved and the interior candle box intact.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mule chest is a traditional storage coffer featuring a hinged top lid above one or two drawers at the base, serving as a historic precursor to the chest of drawers.

Seventeenth-century coffers were predominantly crafted from solid English oak, often incorporating mortise and tenon joinery, iron hardware, and decorative marquetry inlays made from contrasting hardwoods or fruitwoods.

Authentic period pieces display hand-hewn wood surfaces, pegged timber construction, original iron hinges or lock escutcheons, natural shrinkage lines, and hand-dovetailed drawer joints.

An antique mule chest works well placed in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or along a main wall as a low sideboard, creating contrast alongside contemporary lighting and artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year while keeping the piece away from direct radiators or damp walls.
