Description

A good example of a pair of solid Sterling Silver pepperettes. They are set on octagonal footed bases with urn shaped bodies and pierced lids with turned finials. They are stylish and good quality, weighing approximately 116g.

They are clearly hallmarked for Birmingham, 1919/1920 and the maker William Goss

They are both in good condition and have been gently cleaned and polished. There are some faint surface marks and signs of age and use and a couple of small dinks and dents but nothing detrimental and they display well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver pepper casters emerged in the late seventeenth century as specialized table accessories designed to hold and dispense finely ground pepper. Often crafted in pairs or sets with salt cellars, they became essential elements of formal European dining service.

Traditional pepper pots were raised or cast from solid sterling silver. The domed caps were manually pierced with decorative hole patterns to allow even flow, topped with turned finials and supported by hand-finished pedestal or octagonal bases.

Authentic British silver items feature clear stamped hallmarks including the makers mark, town mark, lion passant for sterling purity, and a date letter code. Examining the weight, seam joins, and hand-pierced detailing also aids verification.

A pair of silver casters can be positioned on a dining table centrepiece tray, displayed inside a glass cabinet, or arranged along a sideboard top alongside porcelain or crystal tableware.

Clean sterling silver by gently wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a small amount of non-abrasive silver polish when tarnish appears. Avoid harsh chemical dips and dry thoroughly to prevent moisture marks.
