Pair of Victorian Silver Bonbon Dishes

19th century
Description

A lovely matching pair of sterling silver bonbon dishes. They are boat shaped with pretty pierced detailing. They are stylish and good quality, weighing approximately 132g.

They are both clearly hallmarked for Sheffield, 1894 and the maker Henry Aitken.

They are in good condition for their age. There are some faint surface marks, small dinks and some spots of tarnishing but nothing detrimental and no major damages. They have been gently cleaned and polished and display well.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian silver bonbon dishes were crafted as specialized tableware designed to serve small sweetmeats, candied fruits, or nuts during formal dining and tea services in the nineteenth century.

These dishes were commonly formed using hand-piercing tools or mechanical fly presses to cut geometric lattice patterns into rolled sterling silver or silver plate, followed by hand-finishing and polishing.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmark stamps indicating the makers mark, town mark, silver purity mark, date letter, and sovereign duty mark denoting manufacture between 1837 and 1901.

A pair of small silver dishes can be positioned on a sideboard or dressing table as decorative trays for jewelry, keys, or small personal items, adding quiet metallic texture to modern surface displays.

Silver tableware should be gently polished using a specialised silver foam or cloth, washed in warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and stored in non-tarnish cloth bags to prevent heavy oxidisation.
