Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Coffers were among the primary forms of storage furniture in European households from the Middle Ages through the 17th century. They served multi-functional roles as storage units, travel trunks, and seating, frequently decorated with relief carvings and marquetry to denote wealth and status.

Period coffers were primarily constructed from solid English oak, joined with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs. Decorative elements often incorporated contrasting timber inlays, such as bog oak or boxwood, paired with hand-forged iron lock plates and hinges.

Authentic period coffers exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular joinery, and evidence of historical wear on the feet and base. Original ironwork, natural oxidisation within keyholes, and deep, uneven patination inside and beneath the piece also indicate genuine age.

A carved coffer functions as a focal point at the foot of a bed, beneath a window, or within an entryway. To balance its heavy, historical visual weight, pair it with contemporary lighting, neutral textiles, or minimalist artwork.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations to prevent the solid oak panels from shrinking or splitting.
